About

portrait of the artistHello there!

My name is Maria Friberg Berntsson, also known as Sussi1 in the digital art community, and I like to paint with pixels.

(Pixel=Short for Picture Element, a pixel is a single point in a graphic image)

I grew up in a small town, located by the ocean and surrounded by a deep, mythical forest, in the southwest of  Sweden (after a lot of moving, I now live in that same town with my husband, our two girls and two cats and possibly a little goblin in the attic).
I have been drawing all my life, illustrating stories from folklore tales and historical characters, always on the look out for strange critters in the woods or a glance of the mermaids in the sea. These  major interests followed me into my professional career, I’m a teacher of Art and History.
I first came in contact with the digital media, both 2D and 3D, just a few years back, making custom content for a well known PC game. This made me more interested in finding art by digital artists and so, a new world opened up for me.
I prefer to work in Adobe Photoshop,  I usually start with line art in a traditional way, pen & paper, then scan in my sketches and finish them in Photoshop with the help of my Wacom graphire 4 tablet.
Inspiration comes from my mythical forest and it’s inhabitants, music, books, movies (just love a good movie, especially a scary one) and the general absurdity of life.
Give me coffee, pleaseMy spare time is devoted to my family and doing kids stuff (my youngest is three years old) and in the summertime the whole family goes sailing. I love the sea! Unfortunately I haven’t seen any mermaids lately, I think they’ve moved to Denmark.
I feel truly privileged to be able to visualize my inner images and I do believe that with passion and persistence (and lots  & lots of coffee) I can make my dreams come true.

Do you want me to paint something for you? Absolutely, don’t hesitate to contact me!

A painting requires a little mystery, some vagueness, some fantasy. When you always make your meaning perfectly plain you end up boring people. (Edgar Degas)
